'Larch on Elterwater' - Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England
The Lake District National Park is one of the scenic gems of the British Isles and has attracted many artists and writers throughout the centuries. This was a wonderful winter's morning, cold, crisp and frosty, a photographer's dream! The famous Langdale Pikes are seen in the background rising out of the mist.

'East of Wansfell' - Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England
Wansfell Pike is only 484 metres high but offers incredible views over Lake Windermere, Ambleside, and the mountain ranges of Langdale, Bowfell and Crinkle Crags. This shot was taken looking eastwards from the summit.

'Lingmoor Fell' - Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England
Lingmoor Fell despite its low elevation of 460 metres is one of the best view points in the Lake District.  This fell is surrounded by wonderful scenery and is typical of the many exposed and open fells in the Lake District characterised by rough grassland, dwarf shrub heaths, peatlands, bracken and areas of rock outcrop and screes.

'The Great Langdale Beck' - Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England
The Great Langdale Beck winds it's way through the Langdale valley before running into Elterwater. A slow shutter speed blurs the movement of the water accentuating the static rocks and leaves.

'Cadair Idris and Llyn Cau' - Snowdonia National Park, Snowdonia, Wales
This magical location is almost permanently shrouded in cloud mainly due to its close proximity to the coast and its elevation (the summit of Penygadair is over 890 metres above sea level). Moments before it was snowing with cloud engulfing the entire mountain, within a moment the sun came out, the clouds lifted and this incredible view opened up, it was pure theatre and a moment I will never forget.

'Farnham Church' - Essex, England
A typically English country church standing remotely in open countryside and shot on a late summer's evening using a wide angle (75mm on large format).

'Waterfalls at Raven Crag' - Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England
Raven Crag just north of Chapel Style in Langdale is a popular location for rock climbing. This small rock pool is tucked away along a minor path leading up the crag. Having stumbled across it on a previous visit I knew I had to come back for a shot of this magical location.

'Prehistoric Rock and Ice' - Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England
500 million years of complex geological processes have formed a Lake District landscape of great scenic beauty. The layers of rock formed were shifted and sculpted first by stages of volcanic eruptions and then by the actions of glaciers and meltwater. This picturesque rock formation was shot at the summit of Harrison Stickle.

'Tree Stump and Slate' - Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England
I came across this solitary tree stump in the Langdale area and shot it to contrast against the bluish-green slate of the famous Langdale quarry in the background.

'Rockfall at Raven Crag' - Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England
While taking this shot of two trees and the cliffs, a woman walking her dog stopped and asked me if I was taking a picture of the rockfall, 'which rockfall?'  I asked. Apparently the rocks to the left of the trees had fallen away from the cliffs only the night before!

'Rock, Tree and Moss' - Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England
A typical Lake District woodland scene, the high rainfall in the core of the national park favours woodlands rich in Atlantic moss, ferns, and lichen. This shot was taken at Sawrey's Wood on the slopes of Lingmoor Fell.

'Autumn Forest'

A simple forest scene in autumn, a slow shutter speed (usual for large format photography due to the small apertures required to get the depth of field) blurs the tree tops providing a sense of movement

'Bowfell from Lingmoor Fell' - Lake District National Park, Cumbria, England
This was a memorable March morning on Lingmoor Fell, the sky and clouds were spectacular for an area which usually sees more than it's fair share of bland grey stratus cloud. The scattering of snow on Bowfell was the icing on cake!

'Boat and Boat Houses' - Loch Ard, Trossachs, Scotland
A loch in the Trossachs district of Stirling, Loch Ard lies to the north of Loch Ard Forest, 5 km west of Aberfoyle. Sir Walter Scott, in his novel Rob Roy, described the loch as 'an enchanting sheet of water'. A narrow band of focus on the front of this upturned boat offsets the weathered hull against the boat houses in the background.

'Precipice' - Snowdonia National Park, Snowdonia, Wales
The 'Precipice Walk' is an 800 foot high path passing through an interesting variety of habitats which include deciduous woodland, a conifer plantation, meadows, and lakeside. For this shot I strayed away from the regular path for a rugged view of this breathtaking part of Northern Wales.

'Hoar Frost, Birchanger Forest' - Birchanger, Essex, Cumbria, England

Hoar Frost Birchanger Wood Jan 2009

This shot was created from 3 large format images stiched together a technique I have been perfecting for several years, it was made in the very cold winter of 2009. I drive through this forest on my way to work and on the Friday morning had seen a spectaculr 'Hoar Frost' which is a weather phenomenan rarely seen in the south of England and even rarer in a dense forest. A Hoar Frost only forms in very low temperatures and I knew I had witnessed something special which I might never see again. I kicked myself all day for not going back home to get my camera so on the Saturday morning I was prepared on the off chance that lightning may strike twice, and it did!!
